Gary Lineker urges England to 'go all out' for Jurgen Klopp to replace Gareth Southgate after Euro 2024 failure as he explains why ex-Liverpool boss is more 'realistic' target than Pep Guardiola

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Three Lions’ current boss has been at the helm since 2016, taking in over 100 games in the most pressurised of jobs. He has overseen runs to a World Cup semi-final and back-to-back European Championship finals. Tangible success has proved elusive and the expectation is that Southgate will now move on ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the calendar year.

  • WHAT LINEKER SAID

Various names have been discussed as next England boss – including Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino – but Lineker has told the podcast: “I think he's [Southgate] been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team. And, now, maybe it's time for someone else with a more modern, attacking style of football. Do you go English? There’s only really Eddie Howe. Say Gareth does call it a day? I suspect he will, it must be so tough, demanding, so hard. If you go English, we mentioned, somebody maybe like [Frank] Lampard, who would get respect. But wouldn’t you go all out for Jurgen Klopp? Klopp's been out of a job. He'll have had a bit of a rest. Club managers are paid an awful lot of money, I can’t see the FA stumping up that sort of cash. I think we'd all love Pep [Guardiola] but do you realistically think we'd get him?”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fellow former Three Lions striker Alan Shearer added on that debate: “Do you really think England would go for a German manager? I'm for English managers. Howe would be the outstanding candidate. There's a lot going on at Newcastle. The guys who appointed Eddie have now left.”

  • WHAT NEXT?

Klopp severed ties with Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, bringing an almost nine-year spell at Anfield to a close. He has spoken of taking a break from coaching, with an approach from the USMNT already being knocked back, and Southgate is yet to confirm that he will be walking away from the England dugout after suffering an agonising 2-1 defeat to Spain in his latest bid to land major silverware.
